Jean-François HENNINOT est né à Cambrai (Nord) en 1966. Il a obtenu sa thèseen 1992 au Laboratoire de Spectroscopie Herztienne (université de Lille 1) dans le domaine de la spectroscopie infrarouge en jet supersonique. En 1993, il devient Maitre de Conférences à  l'Université d'Artois où il constitue avec le prof. M. Warenghem une équipe travaillant sur de nouveaux dispositifs des télécommunications basés sur l’association de fibres optiques et de cristaux liquides. En 1997, il a co-découvert l’effet de soliton optique spatial dans ces matériaux. En 2002, il a obtenu son habilitation à diriger des recherches. Il a joué un rôle significatif en optique non-linéaire des cristaux liquides. En 2008, il a été promu Professeur des universités. Sa thématique de recherche actuelle est la caractérisation par spectroscopie visible de nouveaux matériaux composites à base de nanoparticules ferroélectriques ou métalliques. Il est l'auteur de 35 publications scientifiques internationales.
